Endurance is a physical and mental discipline. When practiced consistently, both hot yoga and running offer the powerful reward of endurance. In a recent study it was found that over 7.2 million Americans are active runners and over 20 million practice yoga. The same study found that people who practice one activity have started to practice the other. Currently 36% of America’s runners are also doing hot yoga.*

The reason for the crossover? The mental aspect in running is strikingly similar to the mental aspect in hot yoga. Discipline is key. Learning to work through challenging poses is parallel to sticking with a run even when the body starts to tire. Both require determination and drive.

Hot yoga increases flexibility; the heat, allowing for a deeper and safer stretch, loosens joints. Stretching is also a key proponent of running, central to caring for the body before and after exercise. Yoga increases overall stamina both mentally and physically. Likewise, running prepares the athlete for intense conditions, such as 90 minutes in a heated yoga class.

Hot yoga centers on instilling a sense of confidence and motivation. It offers challenges that give a great sense of fulfillment when accomplished. The same gratification is experienced upon completing a run. It is no wonder the crossover rate is high and steadily growing. When a runner turns to hot yoga, they will soon realize the added benefits to be found when they take yoga off the mat, and into their runs.
